Neduntheevu, also known as Delft Island, is a remote and picturesque island located in the Palk Strait, off the coast of Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka. It is the largest island in the Jaffna Peninsula and is known for its unique landscape, historical sites, and cultural heritage.
The island’s terrain is mostly flat and arid, with coral rock formations, sandy beaches, and dry vegetation. One of its most notable features is the population of wild ponies, believed to be descendants of horses introduced during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial periods.
Neduntheevu is rich in history, with remnants of Dutch fortifications, ancient Hindu temples, and Buddhist ruins scattered across the island. The Baobab Tree, said to be over 700 years old, is another fascinating attraction, thought to have been introduced by Arab traders.
Accessible by ferry from Kurikkadduwan Jetty, the island offers visitors a glimpse into a serene and untouched way of life, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the Jaffna region.
